Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical slow growing tree, which ranges from 6 to 25 m height . Native to South-East Asia this tree produces a fruit that has been used for several hundred years in that region for the treatment of wounds, inflammation, and a variety of infections [7,8]. In traditional medicine it is commonly used to treat several illnesses and ailments, ranging from skin infections and inflammation to urinary tract infections .
It takes 8 to 15 years to Mangosteen tree to bear fruit, from which one of the most frequently used parts is the pericarp, mainly due to the fact that it is a part of mangosteen that is known to contain a high content of tricyclic isoprenylated polyphenols referred to as xanthones [2,4].
Xanthones were first introduced as an insecticide and it currently finds uses as ovicide for codling moth eggs as well as a larvicide , nevertheless vitro studies have shown that xanthones do also possess antioxidant, anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic activities , reason for which the scientific community started to raise some interested on these fruit and its active constituents.
