CAPE from beehive propolis arrests Prostate Cancer cells
Capheic Acid Phenetil Ester

Not long time ago we wrote an article about how Honey bees self-medicate using plants, more exactly how they were able to fight bacterial and viral infections reaching the beehive using Propolis, a mixture of resinous products collected by bees from tree buds that was already used by Greeks, Egyptians and others to treat different diseases and affections and actually the source of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE), a substance derived from Propolis found in honeybee products, that was able to inhibit growth of breast cancer stem cells.
Now, in their search for new properties of bee by-products as propolis, and more exactly Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester(CAPE), researchers the University of Chicago Medicine presented a paper on what it seems to be a high step forward in the search for a cure to Prostate cancer, the ability exerted by CAPE to arrest early-stage prostate cancer by shutting down the system used by tumor cells to detect sources of nutrition, causing the consequent cancer cell arrest. "If you feed CAPE to mice daily, their tumors will stop growing. After several weeks, if you stop the treatment, the tumors will begin to grow again at their original pace", "So it doesn't kill the cancer, but it basically will indefinitely stop prostate cancer proliferation." said Richard B. Jones, PhD, assistant professor in the Ben May Department for Cancer Research and Institute for Genomics and Systems Biology and senior author of the study.
It seems that CAPE mechanism of action is not exactly working as other cancer cell inhibitors, causing the apoptosis or natural cell death, in this case cancer cells lose their natural ability to find nutrition to subsist, they lose the molecular signatures allowing them to find nutrition sources.
In this study [1] tumor volume growth after six weeks of treatment rate by half, but when CAPE treatment was stopped, tumor growth resumed its prior rate. The results suggested that CAPE stopped cell division rather than killing cancerous cells. CAPE suppressed the activity of proteins in the p70S6 kinase and Akt pathways, which are important sensors of sufficient nutrition that can trigger cell proliferation.
Research was supported by grants from the Cancer Research Foundation, American Cancer Society, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health, and National Science Council.
Propolis contains bioflavonoids known to have many beneficial properties, being some of these onesantibiotic, antibacterial [2]...etc. However the amount of CAPE and artepillin C, another anti-canceragent found in propolis, is not very high. Among different honey sources studied it was discovered that a new Zealand product, Bio 30, was the highest one in content of propolis among the samples analysed.
In another clinical study, CAPE was able to suppress cataract formation in rats [3], showing how this chemical can protect our systems from other affections. Its cancer prevention properties have for long being part of literature [4], which later on was supported by scientific evidence from several clinical trials in which the use of its derivative CAPE, was proven to be effective as an anti-cancer agent [5].
