Herbs for Helicobacter pylori
Folk medicinal herbal remedies against H. pylori under investigation
For those unfortunate ones that suffer from stomach problems and gastritis-like disorders, and after a while have been diagnosed with this little tiny but very inconvenient bacterial infection named Helicobacter pylori, we have some good news, scientists and chemical engineers are in the search for a cure, a possible way to eradicate the bacteria and prevent some of the effect that it can cause to our organisms, some of them as bad as gastric and esophageal cancers [1].
Helicobacter pylori is a bacteria that grows inside the human stomach and is known to be very resistant to antibiotics and other medicinal treatments. As some traditional herbal treatments seemed to have achieved certain success on the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections, scientists and chemical engineers have done some research on the most common herbs and herbal remedies in order to evaluate their efficacy and success.
In one of the studies [2] analysed, a total of 50 Taiwanese folk medicinal plants were examined and evaluated for their anti-Helicobacter pylori properties and activity. The result showed that out of the 50 plants studied, only Paederia scandens, Plumbago zeylanica, Anisomeles indica, Kuntze, Bombax malabaricum and Alpinia speciosa demonstrated strong anti-H. pylori activities.
Another study focused its efforts on finding herbs, in this case they studied 15 Chinese medicinal herbs, that could be able to inhibit urease, an enzyme that is generally produced by pathogens as Helicobacter pilori and that help the bacteria to resist and persist in the mucous layer of the stomach. The best results were showed by Magnolia officinalis and Cassia obtusifolia, both with inhibition rates higher than 50%, achieving up to 90% after fractionating successively. This shows that plants traditionally used for the treatment of gastritis and gastritis-like disorders may have achieved their properties via urease inhibition.
Let's hope these and other studies will end up on the discovery of the active constituents responsible for this herbal properties and the development of new drugs and medicines for the treatment of bacterial infections as the Helicobacter pilori bacterial infection.
