plumEUGENIA JAMBOLANA (Black plum), also known as Syzygium jambolanum, Eugenia cumini and Eugenia jambolana [2], black plum is a sweet fruit, rich in potassium, magnesium and phosphorus, that is also known for its many medicinal uses, some of them as important as the anti-cancer and anti-viral benefits that its extracts have exerted in some clinical trials and studies. Its seeds were used in Ayurvedic treatments to treat diabetic problems, and that's only the beginning, the medicinal uses of black plum fruit and its seeds go beyond, let's see some of them..

Studies and clinical trials have shown how effective can black plum be for the treatment of diabetes mellitus [4], inflammation, ulcers and diarrhea, dysentery [3] possessing also anti-neoplastic, chemopreventive and radio-protective properties [1]. It has showed strong anti-bacterial properties, showing evidence that traditional methods claiming the use of black plum as anti-bacterial agent have now some scientific evidence proving they were truth [3].

Do black plums have anthocyanins?

The anthocyanins, one of the active constituents found in black plum, is the pigment responsible for the red color and one of the reasons why black plum exerts also so many health benefits. Some of these anthocyanins include delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin, peonidin, and malvidin [6]. Anthocyanins beneficial effects can certainly be attributed to their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Black plum and breast cancer

And last but not least, black plum extract inhibited and induces apoptosis of human breast cancer but not towards the normal MCF-10A breast cells [7], with which we can say Eugenia jambolana can be considered another potential natural remedy to help our our fight against breast cancer.
